Prepare hula hoops in rows pointing toward a center point.
Create math work sheets with problems that are suitable for your age group.
For this activity, you will need a large open space such as a school yard/gymnasium. Split the Navigators into small groups of 3-5 people per group if possible. Assign a number to each Navigator in a group in ascending order (example 1-4….) This will be the order the problems are given to the team. (Place Navigators in groups with diverse math skill levels to encourage teamwork.)
Next, form Trailways -paths by placing Hula Hoops into a string on the ground, one path per group, leading towards the “Star Point” in the middle of the space. (All paths should have the same number of hula-hoops) The teams will be given a math word problem or equation to complete. Navigators are given a total of 30 seconds as a group to work on the equation or word problem and solve it. (Time can be increased based on chapter leader’s discretion). The chapter leader will go to each group and check to see if they have the correct answer. As each team completes their equation with the correct answer, they will advance forward one space. The twist to the game is that the navigators will change Trailway -paths with the team to their left when the group leader yells out “Buddy System”. Example: If team two is one step away from the middle and the chapter leader yells out “buddy system”. The teams will then move to the path on their left trading places. Once one or more teams make it to the middle that will complete the round. The equations should get more challenging each round, and team members are reshuffled at the end of every two rounds. (Based on the Chapter Leader discretion.) |
