Get area set up for each activity. Talk about teamwork
For this activity, you will need a large open space such as a courtyard or gymnasium. Divide the obstacle course into four stations: (1) Teamwork, (2) Communication, (3) Problem Solving, and (4) Fitness. (Each task should promote an inclusive approach). Chapter leaders are encouraged to design the obstacle course based on their preference, imagination and resources with an example provided below:
Example Activity: This is a timed activity and can be played with multiple rounds
Split the Navigators into two parallel lines and assign a “Sweep” at the back of the line and a “Lead” to the front. Now, give the lead a ball explaining to each Navigator that they each must pass the ball over their head to the teammate behind them until it reaches the “Sweep”.
Once the “Sweep” has the ball, the group should about face and now the “Sweep” becomes the “Lead”. This time passing the ball between their legs handing it off to the person behind them.
Once the “Sweep” gets the ball the team will about face again changing the “Sweep” back to the “Lead”. Now, following their original “Lead” Navigators run for a lap around the space in a straight line (Teammates should not pass each other) while the “Lead” is holding the ball in their hands.
Once, the lap is completed the team should line up line shoulder to shoulder and the chapter leader will whisper a code word into the ear of the “Lead”. The “Lead” will whisper the code word into the ear of the teammate next in line while handing off the ball and whispering the code word from one to the next until it reaches the “Sweep”. (The team is not allowed to move to the next challenge until the code word is correctly passed all the way down the line to the “Sweep”). Chapter Leader should use a different word for each group and should only use monosyllabic words.
Once the chapter leader gives the okay, the team will then form a circle and toss the ball at random around the circle reciting the following words Mind, Body, Planet, Freedom (Words must go in that exact order without skipping over a word, and each player will only state one word each) until all players have gone at least once.
The final challenge will be a relay race around the space. The team should form one single file line with the “Lead” at the front of the line and the “Sweep” at the back once again. The navigators will each take turns running one full lap around the space handing off the ball to the next teammate after each lap until it reaches the “Sweep”. The first team who completes the task will win the round.
The team who won the most rounds will be declared the “The Navigators Champions of Fitness”
