Create a list of vocabulary words that the groups is learning for a project or about the environment. Can also use the Navigator Cardinal Points: Truthful; Respectful; Inclusive; Generous; Dependable; Resourceful; Patient; Cooperative.
This activity can be conducted in a classroom setting.
Divide the Navigators into small teams (keep group sizes to 3-5 participants if possible).
Have each team face a white/chalk board or something that the team can write on. Tell the Navigators that they are out in the woods and must rush to guess all the vocabulary words before nightfall when the temperature drops to freezing.
Next, place a chair facing each group with the back of the chair to the white/chalk board. These chairs will be the “Hot Seats”. The chapter leader will choose one Navigator at random from each team to come up and sit in the “Hot Seat”.
Using the “Navigators vocabulary packet” the chapter leader will choose one of the words and write it clearly on the board. Team members will take turns providing clues to the person in the “Hot Seat” to guess the vocabulary word behind them. The Navigator in the “Hot Seat” is only allowed to ask the following: Is it a living thing? Is it a place? Is it something I can touch/see/hear? Is it something used in everyday life? Do Navigators use it during a hike? Is it a ? (Guess the word) (These questions can be altered or additional questions can be added as desired). Team members may not use the word itself, only words/actions/phrases/gestures associated with the word when describing it.
The Navigator in the “Hot Seat” will listen to their teammates and try to guess the vocabulary word in one minute.
The team that successfully guess the vocabulary word within one minute will not freeze during nightfall. If a team cannot guess their word within one minute they will do jumping jacks or jog in place for the one minute to unfreeze themselves. (Have all of the Navigators in the space count to sixty out loud with those doing the exercise).
The next team member will now sit in the “Hot Seat” and guess a new vocabulary word.
