Begin the meeting by discussing fire safety.  Consider topics such as:

• fireplaces
• matches/lighters
• campfires
• stoves
• cigarettes
• electric heaters

Consider reviewing some of the resources provided at the bottom of the page

Consider going around the group to ask about any past fire scares or their current knowledge of fire safety

Review the ideas of Stop, Drop, and Roll as well as crawling to get out of smokey places.  Introduce the idea of a regroup or meeting spot for after the danger has past to find your group again.

Game

• Choose who will be “it” (the tagger) first, set boundaries, identify the re-group location, and explain the rules
• The tagger gets three socks or balls with different colors.  One color will mean fire, one smoke, one all clear (consider red for fire, grey for smoke, green for all clear)
• Tagger counts to 10 while the rest run and hide or just run
• Tagger then runs after them and tries to hit (gently) one with a sock/ball.
• Once a kid is hit, the taggers yells out the color they were hit with and everyone needs to do the corresponding action associated with the color
  • Red/Fire – Stop Drop and Roll
    • Stop – The fire victim must stop still. Ceasing any movement which may fan the flames or hamper those attempting to put the fire out.
    • Drop – The fire victim must drop to the ground, lying down if possible, covering their face with their hands to avoid facial injury.
    • Roll – The fire victim must roll on the ground in an effort to extinguish the fire by depriving it of oxygen. If the victim is on a rug or one is nearby, they can roll the rug around themselves to further extinguish the flame.
  • Grey/Smoke – Drop to the ground and crawl
  • Green/All Clear – Everyone run to the re-group location and have them recite their name and parent’s phone number
• Switch who is the tagger and play until they are done.
